Ruth Rendell has been one of my favorite authors for 40 years, but I've never been sure (or, more likely, have forgotten over time...) how to pronounce her surname. Is it REN-dyl or Ren-DELL? Thank you.

Why do we not know Chief Inspector Wexford’s first name in From Doon with Death?

I'm left wondering about the character Dudley Drury. He was extremely anxious when he was being questioned as a suspect. When we find out he wasn't the murderer, the source of his anxiety wasn't explained. Did I miss something? What was making him so nervous?

Did I just miss it or was the origin of the name "Doon" used in the title and continuously throughout the book ever explained? It seemed an odd nickname and was not a short form for the character's real name? Or is this an English saying for admirer, lover or ..... ?

In the early chapters of the book the inspector describes someone as "being on the knife edge spanning from panic to ?" I wanted to write the phrase down and went back to find it and can not (I only had the audio version). Does this ring a bell with anyone? I should have stopped the car and written it down, but I thought I would be able to go back and find it!

Did anyone like it? I almost put it down after a while, enjoyed it more toward the end.
