So I borrowed this book without realising it was the second in the series and my library doesn't have the first in the series. Do I need to read the first book or can I just go straight on with the second? c:

Is there actually a moment in the book where Seregil's eyes are all white? Or is that just a quirk of the illustrator?

I really enjoyed the first book but I had a hard time with how dark this one was. Are the rest of the books in the series this dark, or are they more like the first book? Additionally, is there any sexual violence in the series? I don't think Flewelling would detail a sexual assault, but I could see a character being assaulted and a reference to it later/mention of it in battle or something.
