The characters get established and grow and change throughout, so I think you'd miss a lot. Plus there are a lot of people and things mentioned in Darke which you would be expected to be familiar with before starting. The story in itself is self contained, as in, the central conflict starts in this book and is wrapped up by the end, but lots of story threads continue from Syren and then on into Fyre(less)
