In "Presumed Innocent", Barbara Sabitch is revealed as the actual murderer. I wonder why this wasn't mentioned in "Innocent"?

I started this audio book and got to the part where an (allegedly) intelligent man walks into a catastrophic situation which felled him years earlier... AND two weeks before an election involving his continued seat on judicial bench. Does this just seem stupid or should I continue reading?
