I had been waiting - hoping - for some resolution to this issue because I felt Louise was falling apart in all aspects of her life, and I felt this was all down to what happened with her father. When she began to see the psychiatrist (Dr Shmidt?), I thought this would be the start of her dealing with it - only for that to go horrendously wrong (and a little over the top in my opinion!), so it was left and never dealt with. I really wanted Edward to face the consequences of his actions, apart from being a terrible father, he was a terrible husband and person in general, but he had never had to account for anything, and I realise that was because of the era it all happened, but it still annoyed me and made really angry because he just got away with it.(less)

Is anyone familiar with this usage of the word "char"? (Clary to Archie) "It was an old family joke. She nearly smiled then. 'That was one of Dad's chars, wasn't it? Dad did seem to have the most remarkable collection of them.'" (p. 308 in Pan Books edition). I suppose it means something like "joke," but I can't find any remotely similar definition, even in the OED. But could one have a collection of charwomen?
