This new edition translated by Richard Pevear gets very high marks and both restores material as well as making the translation less florid and closer to the original French.(less)

Pevear is a controversial, critically acclaimed literary translator known for translations on the literal end of the literal/accessible spectrum. Ellsworth is an experienced and dedicated hobbyist storyteller who learned French because he wanted to read Dumas' novels in the original language. When you read even a paragraph or two from their versions of The Three Musketeers, you can feel the difference. Ellsworth's is smoother.
