After reading some of the reviews here, I have a question that none of the reviews I read, addressed or answered. How well does the author, John Jakes, through his characters, portray California Native Americans, Asian immigrants, and California Hispanics during the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century? I do not want to buy any novel that glosses over the complexity of any part of history.

There is a quick mention of a tourist excursion to see mission ruins in Monterey. For me, he didn't do any glossing over of Asian immigrants, or of the many other immigrants who helped shape California. Most all of the Hispanic references are of migrant workers from Mexico. The author does bring much depth to the complicated history of California, both north and south. By way of explanation, my roots in California are from "Okies", Oklahomans who came to California during the depression of the 30s. It was meant as a slur. Happy reading.(less)
