I am wondering about the plausability of Penhaligon not firing the carronades. He was literally seconds away from giving the order, and suddenly, he didn't, and turned the ship around. Given all the build-up for this moment, how would he explain this to his sailors? How could they still obey and respect him as they did minutes before? How could he justify it to himself considering his future, coming back empty?
