I did a google search of the significance of the title, but found nothing definitive. The 42nd parallel passes through Chicago where 4 of the 5 spent time and two, Mac and Eleanor, grew up. So perhaps the commonality of Chicago was JDP reason for naming the book 42nd Parallel. (less)
