How do people feel about this use of Shakespeare's name? I avoid such novels. To me, it's a cheap gimmick, a bit dishonest actually. I like CJ Samson's Matthew Shardlake, a totally made-up character. Writers who exploit existing works or authors are too gimmick-driven for my taste - spin-offs on Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Dickens, 'new' Sherlock Homes novels. No thanks.

Most of the 'sequels' to Jane Austen I dislike, except for PD James's 'Death Comes to Pemberley'. Anthony Horowitz's new Sherlock Holmes books are delightful. I agree about CJ Sansom; I don't think the John Shakespeare books are nearly as good. But this is just a name; no connection with Will is ever suggested - and the town I live in used to have a mayor called Ron Shakespeare.(less)
