I just finished reading this, and I would say yes.

The book could be labeled a (very) dark satire, because Ballard is trying to make a social commentary. Yet, the book gives off a deep eerie feel because it depicts a plausible homicide with a tone halfway between a police report and a more traditional horror-writer like Clive Barker. Even though there are no monsters or stereotypical abnormalities in this book, I found it spooky because I could genuinely believe something similar happening in real life.

Give it a go! It didn't take me longer than two or three sittings to burn through it. (less)
