Does the book have a happy ending?

Jeanine M Yes and no. Yes, because several of the main characters perservere in the face of horrible discrimination and deprivation. But, just like in real life…moreYes and no. Yes, because several of the main characters perservere in the face of horrible discrimination and deprivation. But, just like in real life, but more so because of the times and beliefs about class & race, we lose people due to extenuating circumstances that are out of one's control. (less)

The book mentioned that Maurice thought he and Rosett…moreProbably by the way they dressed and where they lived. It was known that Tete was Rosette's mom. The book mentioned that Maurice thought he and Rosette could live somewhere that no one knew them and they could pass as a white couple. Tete's husband didn't want her to go around barefoot, "like a slave." There may have been a brand or notch of the ear to mark that someone was of black descent. I think the caste system was so strongly ingrained in everyone that people just "knew." (less)
