At least basic schooling was common and often free in Great Britain and many Protestant countries at the time. Unlike in Catholic countries, where reading was suspect and people were not encouraged to read and certainly not interpret the Bible for themselves, both the established church and all the Dissenter sects strongly encouraged Bible reading as a source of moral fortitude. Boys were more apt to be taught, of course, and certainly they were the ones in line for any scholarships or patronage, but it was widely felt that it was important for women, as future mothers and the first teachers of their children, be able to know at least enough to give children their first lessons.
Along with the readers came an explosion of newspapers and pamphlets as well. This was the time when reading first became a popular pursuit and not the province simply of the wealthy and educated. Political pamphlets, newspapers and novels were all written for the general mass of readers and could be read for free in coffee houses, through lending libraries and posted in shop windows. People often read to one another, as well, and knowing how to entertain others in this way was a valuable skill.
Bottom line, knowing how to read is not a given for a woman in these circumstances, but it's not wildly improbable either.(less)
