Seemingly for no reason.

Personally, I think he likes the power he's inadvertently been handed and the end of the world has simply unmoored him ethically.(less)

However, to answer you question, I'd say that the biggest theme would be Eternal Conflict (such as Man vs. Self, Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature) and/or Hope.
