In terms of the disabled, I like the idea of Forrest Gump because of his wit and ironic fortunes. Though it would be nearly impossible to make a generalized statement to suffice to all disabled people, I don't think that disabled people have hard lives with few opportunities to succeed. I grew up with four disabled siblings and though their disabilities made certain things harder for them, they didn't have a hard time "succeeding" as the stereotype leads us to believe. Sure, things are hard for disabled people but not impossible.

Back to Forrest Gump. I don't think Gump as a character is meant to be analyzed so closely - rather his goofy and ridiculous experiences seem to be a more lighthearted take on disabilities rather than an insult or misconception. His story is so silly that you have to laugh. He is portrayed as an idiot without common sense on the surface, but through his thoughts we see that he is able to have complex thoughts that no idiot would be able to muster. (less)

The screenwriter for the sequel was saying HIV, but the book is so completely different that I don't think you could assume he knows what he's talking about.(less)
