Uhtred's story is a long one. In order to understand his complex upbringing and conflicting loyalties, I would begin with The Last Kingdom. Both books are very well-written and informative about the period. If you haven't seen the series on Netflix, I would definitely recommend reading the books first, then viewing the series, which is also quite good. (less)
