Yes, the entire series is about men and fighting, but there are also powerful women and priests, treachery and intrigue, Christian and Norse religious rites. In short, everything is here to make 9th century England come alive. The historical note at the end of each book reveals what is fact and what is fiction. Cornwell states at the end of the first books that the purpose of the series is to explore how a unlikely character such as Alfred, the first king of England, who was sickly and overly pious, managed to stitch together a nation from a patchwork of rebellious regions. Also the Netflix series based on the books is terrific but unfortunately doesn't follow the books as closely as I would like. (less)

I read the first one years ago, and when I bought the next two a few months ago I read the first one again and I'm glad I did. Some series, like Flashman, you don't have to read in order, but with this series you'd be lost if you read them out of order.(less)
