I know this is the second book in the series, but it sounds like it's almost a prequel. Is it possible to read this book before the first book? Would there be any major plot details I would miss by reading the series out of order?

Is this the first book in the series ? I haven't started reading it yet but was looking forward to after taking it out of my local library but if it is not the first book in the series I don't want to read it if that makes sense ? I want to read the books in order :)
