We t…moreI don't know the history in detail, but I've read it as being a reflection of both 'Christian' europe and 'muslim' arabia during the middle ages. We tend not to view any of the moral frameworks of past cultures in a positive light these days - whether this is because we have learnt from our mistakes, or not, is an interesting question. But whether looking back, or making comparison to the present, I don think racism is necessarily the issue - it might be a bigoted view of culture rather than a race-based prejudice - or as you suggest, an honest attempt to depict a cultural paradigm which clashes with western sensibilities.(less)
