Question about Fort Krasia: Not getting this whole desert spear thing. They break spears in every fight with every demon, yet they're in a tree-less desert. There's no trade. They use arrows like crazy and "scorpion" ballista for shooting huge spear projectiles. Which some at least must burn up by fire demons. So where does all this dang wood come from?

Is anyone or has anyone really struggled getting into this book? I LOVED the first one.. but this one.. I am strugglinggg to get into it - apart from being confused I have no idea what I'm reading.. Please tell me I'm not the only one and that it gets better!??

How do people feel about Krasian society being based so blatantly on Muslim extremists? I'm no fan of extremists of any kind, particularly muslim terrorists because of the harm they have done in the world. Also, it amazes (and somewhat pleases) me that a book can still get published today even when it doesn't pander to PCness. But it does smack of racism. What do readers think?

We t…moreI don't know the history in detail, but I've read it as being a reflection of both 'Christian' europe and 'muslim' arabia during the middle ages. We tend not to view any of the moral frameworks of past cultures in a positive light these days - whether this is because we have learnt from our mistakes, or not, is an interesting question. But whether looking back, or making comparison to the present, I don think racism is necessarily the issue - it might be a bigoted view of culture rather than a race-based prejudice - or as you suggest, an honest attempt to depict a cultural paradigm which clashes with western sensibilities.(less)
