That way, if she was examined by doctors in order to prove that the old prince was impotent (which were his wife's grounds for divorce), they would find her not to be a virgin. The prince believed Nino didn't follow through, and so he insulted him in order to precipitate a duel. But Nino did follow through, only he got the wrong woman. The prince's wife had switched places with her best friend (Agnese, the girl who is travelling dressed up as a boy), and had gone away to see her cousin (the one she was in love with).

Presumably Nino did not know what either of them looked like, so he attacked the girl that was there (Agnese) and believed he had done what he was hired by the count to do. Afterward he was wracked with guilt for his crime. He agreed to the duel in order to die, because he felt he had ruined his own life and hers, and had lost his soul.(less)
