Cronin goes overboard with his descriptions and ends up killing the pace and rhythm of the book. Many of his side trips and descriptions are completely pointless to the story. When he spent pages describing Amy's nun's background, for example, made me wonder whether this character was vital to the story. It wasn't.(less)

After refinin…moreSo, they were trying to "refine" the effects of the virus. In each of the previous 12 the virus had some unspecified undesirable effect. After refining the virus through the infection of each of the previous 12 they had it at a point where they needed a child, since a child had better healing/regenerative/still developing tissue. Of course what made Amy special was the same thing that made the 12 special. They were essentially "disposable" human beings. The government could do what they wanted and no one would know or care. Amy had zero family or other human connections. Therefore, she was selected for the program. The fact that there seemed to be something special about her (reference the zoo incident pre-abduction.) I do not believe was ever explained in The Passage or in The Twelve. (less)
