Government is the only entity that can keep a monopoly that harms people over any significant period of time. Market forces always work to compete away any non-governmental protected monopoly's advantage.

For more on this issue, I highly recommend the works of Dominick Armentano, such as his The Myths of Antitrust and several other works. Also Murray Rothbard and Ludwig Mises deal extensively with monopoly.(less)
