Inflation adjusted, that is 1.8 USD in today's dollars.
So he was spending , adjusting for inflation, between 2800 and 3300 dollars a year all those years. You cannot use today's price, totally inflated by taxes to deter people from smoking, to calculate the prices 65 years ago. (less)
