I was confused by part III of the book. It seemed like old Adam (dying in his Sky Room, definitely a mortal) and Hermes, the narrator (definitely a god) became one person, interchangeable. Was that so? And if so, why? Later Hermes seems an independent voice again, promising happy endings in heaping handfuls (to use P.G. Wodehouse's phrase). Does anyone have any idea about why the author might have done this?
