Why is Herzog considered a great novel? I enjoyed it, though it did seem to sag in the middle then pick up in the last third to quarter.

I am reading it now, and find it more entertaining than I would've been able to back in its heyday. The anti-hero perspective is reminiscent of Bel Ami (Maupassant) , or Zen (Italo Svevo's Conscience of Zeno). The turns of phrases are beguiling, and merit a double take almost every time. Reflections on issues of the day (1963) are STILL around, oil drilling in the Arctic and more....(less)

Hi, I'm 20% of the way into Bellow's Herzog and am battling to keep going ! Is there any encouragement ? Does the story ever get going ? I'm at the point of shelving it for my old age !! Moses is wandering in the desert and still has another 40 years to go ! I am unable to accompany him. I'll have to go back to Egypt..

Have just finished Saul Bellow's novella, Seize the Day. It is deceptively simple - a day in the life of rather ordinary man but it pulls you in. Now I am re-reading Herzog. Last time was in my teens and I think it eluded me. Perhaps this time will be better?
