Marie I haven't finished it yet but it seems to be about the conflicting ideas of what it means to be a woman in a modern but also very conservative society…moreI haven't finished it yet but it seems to be about the conflicting ideas of what it means to be a woman in a modern but also very conservative society. It was published after second-wave feminism and the fact that the story is set in 1899 seems to say that both the setting and the context in which it was published were "the beginning of a new era". It entangles the question of "what does it mean to be a woman" with a theme of reality vs. illusion. (less)
