One of these covered earlier in the book involves the importance of the observance of time in Christian worship. The author highly praises the use of the common lectionary to prescribe the scripture that will be used in the services of many churches through out the world on the same days.

The lectionary observes the times of celebration throughout the Christian year and works through scripture in a manner that reflects this. Through this we get a consistency of focus and intent among many churches in the Christian body. However, the individual churches responses to that common scripture may be quite different. One may simply read the scripture and include a sermon on a different topic. One may use liturgical art to highlight a specific aspect of the scripture. Another may use a choral piece to guide the thoughts of the congregation. Another church may delve deeply into the exegesis of the verses while another brings out the eschatological implications. Another service may not include a sermon, but simply the reading.

This is but one way to answer your question. This book and other related resources show us that Christian worship is widely diverse, but that does not mean it lacks constancy.(less)
