Considering how integral FTL is to the Known Space stories does anyone else think that Niven wrote The State books as a hedge against physicists discovering that FTL travel was utterly impossible, so as to have a true Hard SF series that would survive such an event? Considering how integral FTL is to the Known Space stories

Ron Henry No - I think he was just interested in the time-travel aspect of relativistic speeds to get his character far into the future.
