Magnus' house seems to be part of the dark peat, just like he is, hunkered down, half buried in solitude and past trauma. He seems like on of those gods of the earth, who remind the islanders of their eventual fate. All of them seem to hide their feelings close to the vest, even those who are loud and opinionated; you don't feel as if you could ever really know them.(less)

I would like to gift this first book to my Mom to read. I hope she will enjoy it and want to continue with the series. Mom does not tolerate swearing - can anyone advise if the book/series contains a lot of swearing?

I'm about 20% into this book and I'm noticing that a lot of speech from the characters end with an exclamation mark, even when I note that there isn't much to be excited for. Is this how it is through the entire book or is it just my version?
