Did anyone else hate the ending of this book??

I switched back and forth between listening to this on CD when driving, and reading it at home. In the book, the character of the local woman helped by Margaret is called Adhiambo. But on CD, the same character is called Demphina. What's up with that? Why would they change the character's name for the recording?

I expected the book to end in tragedy so was not satisfied with the ending. What do other readers think of this book? Also the book's main character makes light of having her purse stolen, her house burglarized, her car stolen as if it was a usual occurrence. Also where did Margaret learn Swahili?

With regards to Margaret, she’s good with languages so I assumed she knew or had learnt some Swahili before they went to Africa but I don’t recall that being explained in the book. As to the robberies, I think they were shocked and upset but the author's writing is rather flat and often with the tragic events throughout the book the delivery is lacking emotional punch. I think the repetition of the incidents was purely to highlight what a different world Margaret and Patrick come from and their naiveté. (less)
