The whole series is really about Arthur, but you would miss so much of the bits and pieces if you only read the last one. The Merlin in these books are different than some of the others I have read as he is written as Arthur's cousin.(less)
Steve Johnson I think Mary Stewart's Trilogy is the best of the lot. Her writing is brilliant and she has an interesting perspective on Merlin and Arthur.

I think Mary Stewart's Trilogy is the best of the lot. Her writing is brilliant and she has an interesting perspective on Merlin and Arthur.

Almost as good (and better in some ways), is The Once and Future King (T H White), especially book 1: The Sword in the Stone which covers Arthur's childhood in a humorous way, changing into birds and beasts as part of his education.

More challenging perhaps is the Pendragon Cycle (Stephen R Lawhead). The books go from before Merlin was born to the time of the search for the holy grail and the end of Camelot.(less)
