Is it okay to start reading from here? I'm interested in the character but heard the first volume is not good and only collects one issue from Joe Kelly's series (which from I heard is the best)

It's mostly very nineties, and while it does establish a lot of background for the character, I think you'd find Daniel Way's run a lot more enjoyable, and if you want a thoroughly modern Deadpool, you can't go wrong with Duggan's run, which is IMO even better than Way's run and lightyears better than Kelly's run.(less)
