I'm in the middle of this book, started it at the suggestion of a friend. One thing though. The book covers events in the mid-1960s and was published in 1983,, yet includes direct dialogue and loads of detail. Did Mason ever explain how he did that? Was he taking notes in the war or keeping a diary?

Nopik Read the introduction. He explains it all. Dialogs are fitted to events to reproduce facts and emotions. Not exact words.

Bob helped quite a few people who had this reaction to a death by writing about it in Chickenhawk. They were so ashamed of it. Dave Grossman describes this in On Killing as one of the unmentionable reactions that guys are ashamed of but are a natural and common reaction.(less)
