However, it doesn't stay true to the style, and Colfer adds way too much of his own touch, so I would say it's definitaly more of a fan-fiction than an actual part of the canon.

I would hold off and read the rest first. The characters and situations will make very little sense otherwise.

I haven’t read any other Colfer books but in this book he has written in the style of Douglas Adams and I’m not sure how close that resembles his usual work. Unfortunately I personally feel it’s the weakest of the hitchhikers books and I am not the only one. The whole series is definitely worth reading and they aren’t too long.
