I think they were k…moreNear the end of the book we find that the townspeople did try to speak with her, but she never responded, so they finally stopped. I think they were kind to let her live in the history house, after the trauma she'd been through.
But really, this is a junior fiction book, so I doubt this question would even cross a kids mind, nor would they wonder about the apples.
