The worst …moreThe horror really only lies in the realization of what life was like in the deep South. And really in Canada's residential schools as well. The worst atrocities are more suggested than described. There is the supernatural element of 'haints' or ghosts (haunts?') but they don't provide any of the horror, other than discovering how they died, but their presence in the novel is more of a comfort to the hero rather than a terror. I couldn't put it down. I suggest reading it as it brings another level of awareness. (less)
