There is also violence and a few mentions of blood/gore, but I didn't find it overly descriptive. Overall, I think this would be fine for high schoolers as I found it similar in content to my readings/assignments of The Odyssey and The Iliad in high school.(less)

She becomes the literal embodiment of war, although you have to stick with the book to find out what that means for her. She has friends, acquaintances, and allies that help her along her journey, but she is the one that chooses and rises to action. You also have to keep in mind her age (she is quite young in the book, only 12/13 for most of it), and she was encouraged to act and behave a certain way by her parents and elders whom she trusted. Regardless, I found this to be a feminist retelling of Inanna and the epic of Gilgamesh and I cannot recommend it enough, especially if you want to read non Greco-Roman myths.(less)
