There is mistreatment of the mentally ill, but not in an especially violent way. I don't think boys would be interested in this book, but girls at high school level would probably do fine with it. There is a depiction of multiple types of cruelty rendered toward women in this book and society's blind eye to this mistreatment since women don't really have rights as second-class citizens. Which did you find to be the worst?
