To anyone who has read it, does "Small Mercies" pack the same punch as Mystic River? Are the tone/prose and overall quality on par? I want to buy it, but Lehane's last few novels were disappointing.

I loved the historical context, and it’s a real page turner, but the scenes with violence seems so unrealistic to me, like a superhero movie. What do others think?

Was it really necessary to mention every single cigarette every single character lit up and smoked? And right at the beginning of the book I found it surprising that the mother had no problems with her 17 year old daughter smoking one of her ciggies, I guess life was different 50 odd years ago, wasn't it?
