This is a consistent weakness in Mick's books where improbable things are never explained.

The other question is: why would he have thought that Dickie left a note for someone (or was it the Russian who left it on Dickie's phone)?? That was an important motivation to pursue the case but is very improbable. (less)

Unanswered Questions (1)

Another very improbable thing that happens in the book is that Dickie Bow notices the Russian guy and follows him. Apparently Dickie is a washed up old guy working in a small shop with few customers - how would he have noticed someone stopping right in front of the shop? Maybe the Russian stopped in front of it for weeks until Dickie followed him?
