I've read all of Alice Walker's novels except this one and The Color Purple. I watched The Color Purple movie but refuse to read the book because I think it will be too upsetting to read about rape and incest. Does this book (Questions about the Temple of My Familiar) have any similarly upsetting topics?

The first time I read it, I had no idea it was connected The Color Purple. I now realize that one of the more prominent characters is the grandaughter of Celie from TCP. It fills out the atmosphere more completely, but the story makes sense without knowing it.(less)

Simple meaning of this lines-The peaceful nature of the scene is superficial, because during the first few seconds that Suwelo observes Fanny and she disrupts it suddenly, startling him – as the scarecrow startles Dorothy with his ability to speak. Suwelo recalls her “trying to wrap part of a climbing rose cane back on its trellis,” symbolizing Fanny’s fear of change and need of assistance to remove herself from her ?
