Jimmy's nervous mother is described by Toby, for example. The main characters from the first novel are also referred to and in the story. It's striking how they come down a notch when not driving the narrative. It's like seeing that painting of Icarus where he's falling into the ocean and the village people are oblivious. This story seems to describe the social chaos that provided the context for the pandemic. (less)
