Does this book end on a cliff-hanger? It doesn't look like the third book is ever coming out and I don't want to start the series if it has an unresolved conclusion.

I'm so mad. I started reading this book and I found out it was the second one, not the first. Help. I'm hooked now and I don't wanna go back and read the first one because I've already got some spoilers and I don't even have the first book and uuuuuuggghhhh. What should I do?

Can I read this as a standalone? I honestly did not realize it was a series and just picked it up off of the shelf.
