All the Middle English quotes in A Month in the Country come from John Mirk’s Instructions for Parish Priests. Mirk was a canon regular at Lilleshall Priory in Shropshire. (A "canon regular" is a kind of monk. They had to follow a "rule" (Latin "regula"), that is, the modes of life mandated by their monastic order.)
Mirk wrote the Instructions in the early 15th century. (less)
