Differences Between 1st book and movie:
- Mrs. Holmes, entirely. She is not a major player in the book at all. She is in her 60s and runs away from home basically to live free of society, leaving her 14 year old daughter on her own.
- No combat. No hand to hand training. That's all made up.
- Enola goes looking for Tewksbery only after learning of the case and they meet by chance after being captured by kidnappers.
- Sherlock is not a nice sympathetic older brother. He's pretty much the usual cad. There is no "mutual respect" or "reckoning" at the end.

I think a younger reader would be *very* confused by how different all the characters are, but an older reader who understands there is a lot of differences could probably understand and keep up. Also the books are more historically accurate (although have their own anachronisms.)(less)

However, the first book you should read because it provides a background. The Netflix show doesn't quite follow the first book's outline so that isn't a good substitute. (less)
