I put off reading it for a couple …moreI was beyond excited when I learned about this book, and when it finally came out I was dismayed by how slim it is. I put off reading it for a couple months. I finally gave in last weekend, and my goodness, I cannot remember when I was so utter transported and delighted by a story. In my opinion it is perfect in every way. Lyrical, imaginative, poetic, philosophical, suspenseful. Especially during this crazy year, this book was a balm to my soul. I couldn't recommend it more highly.(less)

I find the first three answers here comprehensively wrong-headed.

There is no reason to treat this as a "literary" novel rife with ambiguity. I have read it as a fantasy, in which the impossible must be accepted as real, just like any of the thousand other fantasies I've read, including the author's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. And I swear by my B.A. in English literature that that is the only consistent way in which to read the text!

From another standpoint; Consider the entry in Part 7 concerning poor John Ritter. That narrative would be pointlessly cruel were it not as real as everything else within the novel.(less)

Logically, I would think there would be more than that, and especially more children, since they have the mental capacity required to go there.(less)
