can I read this without having read (or finished reading) the serpent and dove trilogy? :)

Would this be a safe book for my 12yr old? She's just come and asked me if I could get it for her. Published by Harper teen indicates it may have some puff romance, but the blurb mentioning giving in to dark hungers has me uncertain.

Is this book heavy on trauma? Is there mention description of torture? Or any knife scenes? Could someone tell me the most gruesome/violent scenes please? And does it end happy? or is it depressing mostly?

The Scarlet Veil profundizes on this since it's all portrayed from Celie's POV. There are knife scenes, particularly one gruesome stabbing. There are heavy descriptions of violence, blood, dismemberment, injuries and rotting corpses. The book ends on cliffhanger, but I wouldn't call it a happy one, We'll have to wait and see by the end of the next book.(less)
