She had reconciled with herself to stay, was going to tell Yuri about the new baby that night and was going to try to find happiness in her marriage again and have a good life with her family. She even planned her excuses for the Party council she had been summoned to attend, which she missed but planned to go back to the next day and apologise. Then a blizzard starts up and she is cold and implied lost. It ends with her being optimistic she will find her way home through the blizzard but we are left to assume she did not. (less)

What business does a woman named Rae Meadows have writing about gymnastics in the USSR? narratives like this are harmful and perpetuate stereotypes unless they come from ppl who lived these experiences. American reviewers might not notice the lack of nuance that accompanies an American fantasizing about & capitalizing off of Eastern European suffering, but as a Romanian reader, i can't say the same.
