Can this book be read as a stand alone? My husband bought it as a Christmas gift, not knowing it’s part of a whole series. If it is, knowing me I’ll probably go back and read them. But my husband felt bad for me.

The Bosch character started it all, so you could go back to the beginning with The Black Echo - it's the first Bosch novel and introduces his worldview and grit. But if you're really intrigued by Renee Ballard's character, you could go with The Late Show. It's her debut and shows her navigating the night shift in LAPD.(less)
