Telenovelas are TV dramas in Brazil and other Latin American countries. They're often compared to soap-operas, and there are many similarities, but many differences as well.

Soap-operas are low budget (for TV standards), aimed mostly at a female audience (nothing wrong with that) and can last for years and years (which is quite interesting.

Telenovelas in Brazil and I believe in Mexico and other Latin American countries, are prime time TV, with a budget similar to top TV productions, and aimed at everyone. Like soap operas, they are broadcast daily (except on Sundays) and focus a lot on romance and family, but they don't go on forever. They usually have some 160-200 episodes, and then the story ends, no matter how successful it is. That said, if you think about soap-opera, that's a pretty good idea of some of the influences for this series.

I watched a lot of telenovelas as a child and for some reason I wanted to bring some of those tropes to this series and crank up the drama. I realized that it was easier to explain what the inspiration was, but I should have realized not everyone would understand the word "telenovela". (less)

I feel that female-led NA and adult romantic fantasy have manly men as love interests, and that is absolutely not the case here. They're all dumbass kids, including the guys.

That said, this book touches on female sexuality, sexual repression, and purity culture, so there is some making out, nudity, and some references to desire, but it's nothing graphic, and it relates to the idea of growing up, maturing, and becoming an adult, which I think are important themes in YA. So this is to say that this is not a clean book in terms of sexual content. That said, I don't consider it a steamy or spicy book, and it's most definitely YA. (less)
